Heart of Worcestershire College (HoW College) has launched a new two-day course -‘Cyber Security – Accredited Level 1 qualification’ – aimed at the thousands of UK businesses that recent government research* estimates are lacking the basic cyber security skills required.

Available to anyone aged 19 years and over, the course is available for free or at reduced cost, thanks to funding from SkillsBoost Worcestershire. Individuals or businesses interested in attending the course should register to express their interest and find out more.

Available during the week of December 2nd to 6th, the course can be taken online or in person at HOW College’s Worcester campus  (Monday 2nd-Tuesday 3rd December) or at its Redditch campus (Wednesday 4th-Thursday 5th December).

Attendees of the course will be awarded a ‘Level 1 Award in Cyber Security’ and can build knowledge of:

Understanding Cybercrime – types, motives, tactics used and effects on people and organisations.

Protecting against Cybercrime – methods, their importance and setting up user access controls.

The Law and Cybercrime – GDPR, Data Protection Act, Computer Misuse Act, plus employee responsibilities.

This course comes as research undertaken by the Department for Science, Innovation & Technology, found that half of businesses and around a third of charities report having experienced some form of cyber security breach or attack in the last 12 months, and that a high proportion of UK businesses continue to lack staff with the technical skills, incident response skills and governance skills needed to manage their cyber security.

Neil Gardiner, Curriculum, Resource and Quality Leader for ESOL, IT Skills, Adult English and Maths, Community and NEET Partnerships, said: “Heart of Worcestershire College aims to prepare students for careers in the fast-growing field of information security, as technology continues to shape industries and daily life; this new course aims to educate and empower people with the essential skills to combat cyber threats and protect digital infrastructure.”
