Case Study – Concept Covers & Halesowen College

Dec 15, 2025 | For Businesses, For Providers, General, Provider News

1. Company Overview

Name of Company: Concept Covers Ltd Industry Sector: Manufacture of textiles Location: Lye, Stourbridge, West Midlands

Concept Covers Ltd, based in Lye, Stourbridge, is a small UK manufacturer specialising in bespoke garment and protective textile covers. Established in 1999, the company produces high-quality suit covers, wedding dress covers, boot bags, and other custom textile products. They are known for offering tailored designs with options for size, colour, and branding, serving tailors, bridal shops, fashion houses, and independent retailers. All of their products are handcrafted in the UK, with a focus on durability and professional presentation.

2. Challenge or Opportunity

Initial Business Need: The initial business needs focus on modernizing operations and expanding market reach. While the company has strong products, machinery, and capacity in place, it still relies on outdated processes creating inefficiencies that limit scalability. There is also a pressing need to establish a stronger digital presence through e-commerce, online sales channels, digital marketing, and social media engagement in order to counter slowing domestic growth and rising competitive pressure.

Skills Gap or Workforce Issue: The main skills gap lies in digital expertise—specifically in areas of online sales management, digital marketing strategy, and social media content creation—since current strengths are more operational and production-focused. Staff training was required and/or the introduction of new roles dedicated to digital transformation.

3. Collaboration with Further Education

Halesowen College supported by South Staffs College

Type of Engagement:  An innovation partnership was established between the Black Country Innovation Service (via Halesowen College’s Innovation Hub) and Concept Covers Ltd. This partnership would support the company in its digital marketing strategy and involve a college T-Level business student on a work experience placement

The collaboration between Concept Covers, Halesowen College, and its Innovate Advisors demonstrates a successful model of business–college partnership. Concept Covers gained essential digital marketing expertise, Halesowen College students received practical, career-shaping experience, and the college’s Innovate Advisors facilitated knowledge transfer and strategic guidance. Together, the initiative bridged a key skills gap in the business, provided real-world training for students, and delivered tangible commercial outcomes.

4. Outcomes and Impact

The collaboration between Concept Covers, and Halesowen College delivered measurable outcomes across several key areas of business performance. Productivity was enhanced by introducing dedicated digital marketing support, freeing existing staff to focus on core operations while simultaneously upskilling both the student and the company team in new marketing techniques. Staff retention and morale benefitted from the added capacity and fresh ideas brought in without the immediate need for costly new hires. Innovation was demonstrated through the creation of multiple new social media accounts and digital content strategies, which significantly improved brand awareness and online engagement. Lead generation increased markedly, with website traffic rising from hundreds to thousands and contributing to the securing of three major contracts, including one international deal. The initiative generated income through these new business opportunities while reducing costs by leveraging a funded placement scheme rather than outsourcing. Overall, the collaboration delivered tangible commercial benefits while also building future workforce capability through student training and on-the-job upskilling.

5. Testimonial

“Partnering with Halesowen College and the Innovate Advisors has been transformative for our business. The support we’ve received through the T-Level placement has given us a much stronger digital presence. T-level student Josh has created and managed multiple social media accounts, boosting our visibility and helping us attract new customers. This collaboration has not only improved our marketing reach but has also delivered real business results. We’re extremely grateful for the expertise and guidance provided.”

Anthony Jones – Managing Director, Concept Covers

“My placement at Concept Covers has been an amazing opportunity to apply what I’m learning in college to real business challenges. I’ve taken on roles from digital content creation to account management, all with the goal of raising the company’s profile and bringing in new customers. This experience is preparing me for my future career and has strengthened my ambition to one day run my own business. I feel more confident and skilled thanks to the support from both the college and the company.”

Josh Philips – T-Level Student, Halesowen College

“Concept Covers initially came to us for advice on digital marketing and lead generation, and it quickly became clear they needed dedicated support to strengthen their online presence. Working with Halesowen College, we placed Josh on a T-Level work placement, giving him invaluable hands-on experience while helping the business tackle its marketing needs. The impact has been clear—online traffic has grown significantly, brand awareness has improved, and the company has secured major new contracts. It’s a great example of business, education, and innovation working together.”

Richard Johnson – Innovation Consultant, Halesowen Innovation Hub
